I'm glad to here that - I'll pass that on to her :) I'm hoping now that she has passed her dissertation defense that she will get back into photography again. She has a good eye and she likes doing different stuff from me.

She LOVES the photographer. I am a fortunate man and I don't completely understand why she does. I just accept it.

You asked for critiques. This is going to sound a little scathing but just know that I am being really hard on the shot.

The colors are good. The exposure isn't. You did the right thing for the model taking shots in natural soft light, but the foreground and background are very bland tone wise. You end up with a good highlight and detail in the model, but a background full of muddled middle/dark tones and a splash of color that draws away from the subject and leaves your eye no where to go. A little bump in contrast helps this, and you shouldn't consider it cheating since you can do the same with development time in film.

Composition wise you got the basics down, but you are very flat and strait here compared to many of your other works which tend to show very interesting and curvy lines. I would have expected you to have the same head position, but the body pointing toward the background to add curve, interest, and lead your eye into the frame instead of off the edge. The black border creates a negative space that traps the eye in frame (which is what everyone seems to use it for). If you ever think a thick black border makes something look a lot better, check to see if you have elements that go off or lead off the edge of the photo. Though I do give you credit for not abusing it. Finally, people want to "Complete" certain elements, especially arms and hands that are perpendicularly cut. If you had her run her arm over her chest so the brain can "complete it", it would be less leading off frame.

P.S. I do like the photo, and you should still be absolutely proud of your work. I just hate that DA never has ANYTHING negative to say :D

I don't think this is scathing at all. In fact, I really appreciate it. You put a lot of time and thoughtfulness into this and I am grateful. I'm always looking to improve so feedback is important. That's why I like this site (when people do as you did). What you may not be aware of is: (1) this is the first time I've tried to shoot portraits outdoors; (2) it's the first time I've used that lens; and (3) it's the first time I've shot with a 1.8 aperture.

In other words, your feedback is especially appreciated for all those reasons. I have more shots from this group so I'll look at them with your thoughts in mind.

By the way, the black border is only for internet images.

I really like this. Most of all the positioning of the camera. The pose is great for being on the ground like this. It looks as though it may have been cloudy so that gives the whole shot a "ethereal" quality that I enjoy. It also adds to the boldness of the colors. Which make a beautiful background and foreground. Excellent choice in locale.
All in all, you made a wonderful portrait that captivates the eye and lets the mind wander.
